Construction managers lead and oversee the day-to-day running of construction projects on site. Their responsibilities include ensuring that the necessary labour, materials, plant and equipment are available on site when needed, and that construction operations are carried out safely and to the required quality standard. Construction managers prepare the programme, co-ordinate operations on site and liaise with subcontractors and suppliers to ensure the project is finished on time and on budget.
Quantity surveyors are experts in the costs of building. They may work for a private firm of quantity surveyors, or for building contractors, specialist subcontractors or suppliers. Quantity surveyors advise clients on the preliminary estimated cost of building projects and later measure the quantities in order to accurately calculate project costs. They look after the financial side of building projects, preparing detailed cost estimates, assessing tenders from contractors and agreeing the cost of any changes. As experts in the costs of building, they suggest alternative methods of construction and contribute to the overall management of building projects to keep within budget.
